Valentin Rainer
Looking back at last season
Valentin, what was your personal highlight of last season?
Even though I unfortunately got ill shortly beforehand and was anything but fit when I started, taking part in the first Freeride World Championships in Andorra was definitely a highlight. The opening ceremony and the atmosphere around the event were absolutely incredible. Hopefully I will be there again next time - and a little fitter!
Was there also a setback or a difficult situation? How did you deal with it?
Unfortunately, the contest season was marked by a lot of cancellations. I was only able to start at two FWT stops and crashed in both, which meant I missed the cut and therefore qualification for next season. Definitely a setback, but at the same time fresh motivation to fight my way back.
What goal have you set yourself for the coming season?
My goal is very clear: I want to achieve strong results on the Challenger Tour and qualify again for the Freeride World Tour. At the same time, I want to film more and share my adventures and experiences on YouTube.
About the Ski-Club and its history
How did you become part of Ski-Club Arlberg?
I joined the SCA when the Freeride Team was introduced under coach Stefan Häusl. I was welcomed really well from the very beginning, and to this day I can always count on the Ski-Club’s support. That is extremely valuable to me - thank you!
What does being a member of such a tradition-rich Ski-Club mean to you personally?
It is pretty cool to be part of a ski club with such a long history. What I especially like is that, despite its tradition, the SCA is always open to new ideas while placing a great deal of importance on developing young athletes.
Is there a role model from the Ski-Club who has particularly inspired you?
For me, it is not necessarily one individual person. What motivates me more is how many successful athletes from very different disciplines have come out of the Ski-Club, and how naturally sport is part of everyday life here.
Do you remember a special anecdote or story from your time with the Ski-Club that will always stay with you?
I definitely remember my first training sessions with the Freeride Team. Being out there with other young, motivated freeriders, discovering new lines and improving together was simply really cool.
What creates the sense of togetherness in the Ski-Club for you?
I always enjoy being part of Championsday. Athletes from different disciplines and generations come together there, and their achievements receive genuine recognition. I especially like the fact that young athletes are given the spotlight as well.
If you imagine the Ski-Club another 25 years from now, what do you hope for the future of the club and for the next generation of athletes?
I hope the Ski-Club continues on its open-minded path and keeps supporting the full diversity of skiing in the future. Freeriding in particular has always had deep roots in St. Anton, and I hope that remains the case for the next generation, with young athletes continuing to receive the support they need to find their own path in the sport.
